Dysport vs. Botox: Which One Is Right for You?

Wrinkle reducers like Dysport and Botox are extremely popular — and for good reason. These wrinkle reducing treatments work wonders on fine lines and creases on the face. But which cosmetic treatment is right for you — Botox or Dysport? We’ll explore both below.

What to Know About Dysport vs. Botox

What Is Botox?

Botox injections utilize a prescription medicine to effectively block nerve impulses to facial muscles to “relax” them. Wrinkles and fine lines don’t just develop out of nowhere — they’re a side effect of the many facial expressions we make, using many tiny muscles. When Botox injections are used on a wrinkle, the prescription medication works to relax the surrounding muscles, which smoothes out the skin.

The most common sites for Botox injections are around the forehead, mouth, and nose, or the side of the eyes — commonly known as “crow’s feet.” The Botox solution uses an active ingredient derived from the Clostridium botulinum bacterium, which is a purified protein. The treatment is not permanent, and another Botox injection is typically needed within about six months. You should see results within one week to one month after the treatment.

What Is Dysport?

Like Botox injections, Dysport also uses an active ingredient derived from the Clostridium botulinum bacterium. And like Botox, Dysport is an effective wrinkle reducing treatment. The difference is that Dysport is generally best used to treat the glabella, the area in between the eyebrows. Due to facial expressions like squinting in the sun, frowning in concentration, or a furrowed brow while reading or looking at a screen, a vertical line often develops in the glabella area. This line is sometimes one of the first major wrinkles to show up in people in their 20s and 30s.

Dysport offers an FDA-approved method of treating moderate to severe glabella lines. Usually, you can expect to start seeing improvement in the area within a couple of days. People who receive Dysport will need to get another injection, usually within about three to four months.

Are There Any Risks?

Always ensure you’re getting wrinkle reducing treatments like Botox injections, Dysport injections, or dermal fillers, from a credible, experienced doctor. Don’t hesitate to ask for before and after photos of real patients in the practice. There is virtually no downtime after getting injections like Botox or Dysport, but there could be some very rare side effects and complications.

Bruising, swelling, and pain are the most common side effects after receiving injectables. Swelling, headache, drooping eyelids, dryness or excess moisture in the eyes, crooked smiles, or drooling can also manifest in rare cases. Because Botox uses a toxin in its ingredient solution, it can spread from the injection site into the rest of the body, causing issues with vision, trouble speaking, muscle weakness, inability to swallow, breathing problems, and loss of control of the bladder. This condition is extremely rare.

The most important thing is to talk to a reputable dermatologist who is experienced in Botox and Dysport injections. They can lead you to the right treatment for your specific needs and talk you through the process.
