What Are the Latest Fillers and How Do They Differ?

Dermal fillers are a popular way to plump hollow cheeks and give lips a smooth pout. They’re also one of the top cosmetic treatments used to smooth wrinkles and creases on various areas of the face. Here are the most common dermal fillers on the market today, their ingredients, and how they’re best used.

What to Know About Dermal Fillers

What Do Dermal Fillers Help With?

Fillers are injectable substances that work to bring fullness to areas of the face that may be showing signs of aging. For instance, many people notice that their cheeks and the area under their eyes begin to sag and become hollower with age. Some dermal fillers can boost collagen and other naturally occurring substances in the body to restore fullness to those areas.

Many people start to notice frown creases between the eyebrows or marionette lines around the mouth and nose (known as nasolabial folds) and seek dermal fillers to fill in these wrinkles. Some fillers use naturally occurring substances while others utilize synthetic ingredients. Knowing which filler to choose for your specific skin concern starts with seeing a dermatology specialist with expertise and knowledge of the dermal fillers available on the market.

Juvederm Dermal Filler

In the lineup of most popular filler products currently used, Juvederm dermal fillers top the list. Juvederm is actually a “family” of hyaluronic acid fillers that use this naturally occurring substance. When your body produces hyaluronic acid, it then binds to water, keeping your skin hydrated. Natural production of this substance tends to decrease with age, so dermal fillers with hyaluronic acid are commonly used to add the ingredient as well as promote more of it within the body.

Depending on which Juvederm product is selected, it can be used on wrinkles and creases around the nose and mouth, for a lift around the cheekbones, and even for non-surgical chin augmentation. Results typically last for 6 to 18 months.

Restylane Dermal Filler

Like Juvederm, Restylane uses hyaluronic acid to add volume to the face. Restylane can replenish the skin and plump up dents, creases, and wrinkles, as well as non-surgically augment the lips. It’s commonly used in anti-aging efforts on the hands as well.

Because it lasts for slightly shorter time periods than Juvederm – at around 6 to 12 months – it is also a bit less expensive.

Sculptra Dermal Filler

Aside from the hyaluronic acid fillers, there are others that use different ingredients. Sculptra works by delivering poly-L-lactic acid deep under the skin in order to stimulate collagen and elastin production. These naturally occurring substances keep skin looking firm, smooth, and youthful.

While poly-L-lactic acid is indeed a synthetic substance, it’s biocompatible – meaning safe to use in the body – as well as biodegradable. Best of all, once you finish your rounds of Sculptra, results can last for up to two years!
