Why Fall Is the Perfect Time to Begin Tattoo Removal
In the world of dermatology laser treatments, there are a wide variety of options for seemingly every kind of concern. There are laser mole removal treatments that can help eradicate skin cancer, laser treatment for acne scars, and even laser tattoo removal. Here’s why you might consider getting your tattoos removed this fall and how it all works.
What to Know About Laser Tattoo Removal
Laser Treatment for Tattoo Removal
There are many reasons patients come into their dermatologist’s office looking for tattoo removal. Perhaps getting rid of a tattoo is a career-related decision to appear more professional. Or it could simply be that the patient no longer wants the permanent ink that they once chose.
Whatever the reason, laser tattoo removal has become increasingly popular in recent years due to its high effectiveness. Laser treatment for tattoo removal utilizes any one of three different types of lasers, all designed to target different colors and depths of ink. So while one laser might work best on blue, black, and green pigments, another laser might work well on pink and red. There are even lasers designed to target all pigments with the same effectiveness.
How Does Laser Tattoo Removal Work?
During a laser tattoo removal session, a specialized laser emitting pulses of light energy is guided over the affected area. The tiny particles of tattoo ink on and within the layers of the skin then absorb these light pulses. This absorption causes the particles to heat up and then split apart. Post-treatment, the body’s immune system flushes these particle fragments away from the concentrated area of the tattoo. This disperses the color, resulting in a “fading” effect and eventually removing the visibility of the tattoo altogether.
Because only so much of this laser energy can be absorbed in one sitting, laser tattoo removal typically takes between 8 and 10 sessions. And because the immune system requires time for flushing the particles and healing the skin, the treatments are spaced at least 6 weeks apart. So if you’re looking to start this treatment, be aware that it will take an investment of your time and patience.
And keep in mind that while this treatment is highly effective, it’s not always 100% guaranteed. Depending on the type, location, size, and colors in your tattoo, results can vary.
Why Should You Start Now?
Throughout the laser tattoo removal process, gradual fading will occur. This will cause the tattoo to lose its sharpness, definition, and color. For this reason, many people opt to start their treatments during colder months so that they can cover the area with pants or long-sleeved clothing.
Starting laser treatment for tattoo removal in the fall means that you can space your sessions out throughout the winter and, ideally, have your unwanted tattoo gone or mostly faded by the time swimsuit season hits.
